Today’s Students Coalition, More Than 60 Partners, Advocates Celebrate Senate Resolution Designating September 2025 as National Student Parent Month
Five Years Celebrating National Student Parent Month
Today’s Students Coalition, along with 63 partner organizations and student parent advocates, signed on to a letter to Senators Jerry Moran (R-KS) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) thanking Congress for passing the National Student Parent Month resolution. For the fifth consecutive year, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution designating September as a national celebration of parenting students, which acknowledges the sacrifices and contributions made by parents who are also today’s students.
“Parenting students continue to make up almost one-fifth of the undergraduate student population — over 3 million students. Additionally, 48% of parenting students are first-generation college students and 30% are food insecure. Furthermore, 66% of parenting students work full-time or more while attending school, studying, and caring for their children.”
In our letter, we express our gratitude for their commitment to parenting students and highlight some of the reasons this student population deserves and needs support:
- Student parents tend to earn higher GPAs than their peers
- They are 10x less likely to complete a bachelor’s degree within five years
- System changes can increase their likelihood of attaining a degree
