HLA and More Than 70 Organizations, Individuals Urge Congress to Extend the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) in the Next Appropriations Legislation
Affordable Connectivity Program for Today’s Students
Higher Learning Advocates and more than 70 partner organizations and individuals submitted a letter asking Congress to extend the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) with continued funding in the next appropriations legislation.
Like most Americans, college students rely on internet services every day to connect with colleagues and faculty, conduct research, and complete coursework. And, many students need reliable internet to go to class. In 2021, 60% of undergraduate students — more than 9 million people — took at least one class online. Unless Congress acts soon, access to reliable and affordable broadband for the lowest-income students receiving the Pell Grant, is now in jeopardy.
HLA and partners urge Congress to consider continuing the $30 monthly broadband subsidy for eligible households, including those receiving a Pell Grant, which has been crucial assistance for more than one million college students to access learning tools and coursework online.
